When to hire a freight forwarder?

The freight forwarding service basically consists of acting on behalf of the client to book space on the ship/plane with the maritime/air company, and in communication with the authorities, when necessary, involved in the logistics chain. All the documentary part also remains under the responsibility of the freight forwarder, from issuing to data insertion in national customs systems.

Does the freight forwarder release the cargo at the port?

No. The forwarding service is based on: International freight. After the arrival of the cargo at the port/airport of destination, customs clearance begins, but under the responsibility of a Customs Broker hired separately by the client, whether offered by the same company or not.

What is the difference between a freight forwarder and a customs broker?

As explained above, the services are different but complementary. Several companies have a customs broker within their staff or have specific associated companies in this sector, offering the client a joint service. However, always remembering that they are different services in different stages of the process.

What is the difference between a freight forwarder and a maritime/air company?

Companies are the 'owners of the vehicles' (Ships, planes), who sell space to freight forwarders and/or clients directly. That is, the freight forwarder books space from the company and sells it to the client. In this operation, the role of facilitator is clear, as it hires, operates, issues documents, and acts on behalf of the client before the authorities until the effective delivery of the cargo.

How do freight forwarders operate worldwide without having their own unit?

Nowadays, there are several international groups that bring together individual forwarders precisely to meet this need for unity in each country of operation. Whether through a group or not, it is possible to negotiate with forwarders from anywhere in the world, an international logistics operation depends on actions from both the origin and destination, therefore, each logistics partner must be chosen with extreme caution and trust.
